Flavours of the Month: February 2015...

Among other things, there's been a decidedly Rob Zombie feel to my February 2015 - what with watching the likes of "The Lords of Salem", "The Haunted World of El Superbeasto" and "The Zombie Horror Picture Show", but also with listening to "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor" and "Hellbilly Deluxe 2" ... but that's only a little bit of what's been setting the tone of the last four weeks...

Hitler's Last Train (Alain Payet, 1977) Review

Find more exploitation movie reviews here.

“Hitler's brothel patrol on wheels I presume?” Have you seen Fraulein Kitty? If so, you've seen this film too – Fraulein Kitty is essentially a more streamlined version of the plodding norks 'n' Nazis on a locomotive schtick found here in Hitler's Last Train aka Love Train For The SS. Vaguely like Salon Kitty, but on the railway and without the element of spying on disloyal officers, it's another cheap bit of boob-filled Nazisploitation from Eurocin√©...

Fraulein Kitty (Patrice Rohmm, 1977) Review

Find more exploitation movie reviews here.

“You were nothing but a cheap harlot when I saw you.” Practically the same movie as Hitler's Last Train, which was made by the same people just a few months earlier, Fraulein Kitty – with it's severe and insatiable central character Elsa (Malisa Longo) – is a cash-in on the likes of Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS (Don Edmonds, 1975) and Salon Kitty (Tinto Brass, 1976). Boasting sets that quiver whenever someone closes a door, and World War II freedom fighters dressed like they casually stepped in from the 1970s, no expense has been spent in this French 'Nazisploitation' from Eurocin√©, the folks that gave the world the green-skinned Nazi zombies and underwater bush shots of Zombie Lake...

Ethical Theory (2014)

A three part series of short educational films covering Meta-Ethics, Kantian Ethics, and Situation Ethics.

In many ways this was the toughest series to edit in a while. The challenge was to visualise complex philosophical theories - which are relatively straight forward to explain on the page in words - but which are very tricky to illustrate. However, we succeeded, and this time we also used specially commissioned artwork to help us bring these complex ideas to life.

Below you will find more information about the series, including video clips for each film.

Life After Death (2013)

A five part series of educational short films covering the various philosophical theories and perspectives on the subject of Life After Death.

In part it was quite tough to visualise something which, generally speaking, you cannot experience in such a definitive way as to come back and tell everyone about it. Indeed, the nature of life after death - or if it even exists - is the subject of much varied opinion. The most interesting segment to create, for me, was a sequence detailing the story of the 'Enfield Poltergeist'. Similar to the third film in the Problem of Evil series, in which we shot a segment based on "The Brothers Karamazov" by Fydor Dostoyevski, we had to craft a piece in a short time with just what we had around us - and I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

Below you will find more information about the series, including short video clips from each film.

Triple Bill Mini Musings: Aliens, Warriors, and Country Lanes...

Under The Skin:
What's it about?
An alien, with the outward appearance of a beautiful young woman, scours the streets of Glasgow looking for men to take back to a mysterious black space to be consumed.
Who would I recognise in it?
Scarlett Johansson.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
A meandering low-fi sci-fi from the director of Sexy Beast, Under The Skin is a strange tale that's more interested in sensory experiences than it is plot. Filmed from the alien's perspective, our human world is seen objectively from the outsider's viewpoint - myriad voices on the street merge into a muffled confusion, a sea side tragedy is watched like a science experiment. Told partly using hidden camera footage - where Hollywood A-List megastar Johansson vanishes unnoticed into the masses - the film further maintains its naturalistic edge by employing non-professional actors in supporting roles. Visually it's stunning - the opening sequence seems to suggest the alignment of planets only to transform into the creation of an eye - while Johansson's performance is stellar, combining the dangerous attraction of a siren with the vulnerability of a naive interloper. Arguably it's five-to-ten minutes too long, but it's quiet approach occasionally explodes with un-showy moments that deeply disturb - the aforementioned sea side sequence, or what happens within the pitch black ooze for example. It will no doubt test the patience of mainstream audiences, but fans of low-fi curiosities with unique perspectives will get a kick out of it. Johansson continues to build a varied and interesting career. Good.
