Flavours of the Month: April 2013...

LOOKS:

Scott Pilgrim vs The World (Blu-Ray) - yet another visit to Edgar Wright's film adaptation of Brian Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series (which I re-read last month). It's a tall order to cram six volumes worth of material into one film; the compressed time frame doesn't leave room for the more expansive experience of the books, and Ramona is just a touch too aloof - but these are mere quibbles - the film is a jam-packed cult classic.

Storage Hunters - I've gone and got myself addicted to this 'reality/unscripted' show about people who bid on storage lockers that are being auctioned off. It appeals to the innate yearning in all of us - what's in the box?! How much will it be worth?! Will they earn a profit?! These questions simply must be answered!

Mad Men Season 6 - the welcome return of Matthew Weiner's superb 1960s-set drama. Richly textured and moreish in equal measure.

Quadruple Bill Mini Musings: Killer Fish, Outback Heroes, Several Nutters, and Delayed Nuptials...

Piranha 3DD:
What's it about?
Sequel to Alexandre Aja's ultra-exploitation 2010 remake about killer fish chewing on nubile young things, this time directed by John Gulager (son of Clu, Director of the three Feast movies), and taking place in a water park where the life guards are "water certified strippers".
Who would I recognise in it?
Danielle Panabaker, David Koechner, Katrina Bowden, Ving Rhames, David Hasselhoff, Christopher Lloyd, Matt Bush, Gary Busey, Clu Gulager.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
With a diminished budget, and from a movie proudly boasting that it features David Hasselhoff, you know you're about to witness a turkey - and that's exactly what you get. Clocking in at a not-so-hefty 80 minutes, where 1/8th of the entire running time is end credits mixed with distinctly unfunny bloopers and excised moments (really), it's almost entirely flaccid. The direction is anonymous at best, inept at worst, and often veers into utterly moronic territory (even for a schlocky horror) with some truly awful dialogue and some achingly dull characters thrown into the unsatisfying mix. However...

"Sleb" screenplay update...

You can read more about "Sleb" here.

Draft 1.1 of "Sleb" - my one-off television comedy drama about the world of celebrity - is complete. I was aiming for 60 pages, and landed right where I wanted to. All said and done, I think it's gone pretty well...

Hextuple Bill Mini Musings: Aliens, Spiders, Bears, Crims, Kids and Mules...

Men in Black III:
What's it about?
Belated third film in the sci-fi comedy franchise in which Agent J must travel back in time to stop Agent K being erased from history by alien baddie Boris The Animal.
Who would I recognise in it?
Will Smith, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement, Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve, Emma Thompson, Bill Hader.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
After hearing various rumours, such as the production getting underway with only the first act of the script written, I wasn't expecting anything at all good to come of this ... and yet, even with some pretty "meh" reviews, it's turned out better than MIB2. Ironically enough, it's the first act where the film works least well - filled so it is with an awkward lack of chuckles or general interest, but once we're blasted back into the past things get rolling along nicely, if far from perfectly. Josh Brolin (and his entertaining impression of Tommy Lee Jones) steals the movie, while the script is surprisingly not-too-bad considering it was cobbled together on-the-fly by the sounds of it. There's a nice sprinkling of emotion that gives the film a little more weight, and with an entertaining cast of side characters (such as Michael Stuhlbarg's "Griffin", who can simultaneously see all possible futures), it turns out that MIB3 is a good bit of imperfect fun. Alright with many good parts/elements.
